What Should I Wear for a Dance Photoshoot? Outfit Ideas and Preparation Tips
Choosing what to wear for a dance photoshoot can make a big difference in the final images. Your outfit helps communicate your dance style, highlights your technique, and contributes to the overall look of your portfolio.
Whether you're a ballet dancer, contemporary performer, jazz dancer, or another movement-based artist, the best dance photoshoot outfits are ones that complement your movement and make you feel confident.
At Alex Rojas Photography, I work with dancers to create professional images that reflect their individual style and artistic identity. Here are some tips to help you choose your outfits and prepare for your Dance Movement Session.
What to Wear for Dance Photography
When choosing dance photography outfits, consider the type of images you want to create. Clean, simple clothing can emphasize your body lines and technique, while more expressive styling can help communicate a particular mood or artistic concept.
You don't need an elaborate wardrobe to create strong dance photographs. Start with pieces that fit well, allow you to move comfortably, and complement the style you're aiming for.
1. Ballet Dancers: Leotards, Tights, and Skirts
For ballet photography, fitted clothing is often a great starting point because it allows your lines, posture, and technique to remain visible.
Consider bringing:
A fitted leotard in black, white, or a colour that complements your skin tone.
Ballet tights or bare legs, depending on your preferred aesthetic.
Pointe shoes or ballet slippers, if appropriate for your concept.
A simple ballet skirt or wrap skirt for additional variety.
A clean, minimal look works particularly well for images that emphasize extensions, arabesques, and classical ballet positions.
2. Contemporary Dancers: Minimalist and Expressive Outfits
Contemporary dance photography offers plenty of creative freedom. Depending on the concept, you can choose fitted clothing that emphasizes movement or looser pieces that introduce shape and flow.
Consider:
Fitted tops and leggings.
Simple unitards or bodysuits.
Neutral or monochromatic outfits.
Lightweight fabrics that move with your body.
Bare feet or dance footwear that suits your movement style.
Black, white, earth tones, and muted colours can create a timeless look, while brighter colours can add personality and visual impact.
3. Jazz, Hip-Hop, and Commercial Dancers: Show Your Style
For jazz, hip-hop, and commercial dance photography, your outfit can reflect your personality and performance style.
Some options include:
Fitted dancewear or athletic clothing.
Oversized shirts, jackets, or streetwear-inspired pieces.
Statement tops or coordinated sets.
Sneakers or dance shoes appropriate for your style.
Accessories that complement your concept without distracting from your movement.
Choose clothing that allows you to move freely and feels authentic to you as a performer.
What Colours Work Best for Dance Photos?
Colour plays an important role in the overall look of your dance photographs. Your outfit should complement the lighting, background, and mood of the images.
Here are a few helpful guidelines:
Black: Creates a dramatic, classic look and can emphasize silhouettes against lighter backgrounds.
White: Offers a clean, bright aesthetic and can work beautifully with darker backgrounds.
Neutral tones: Beige, brown, grey, and muted colours create a subtle, timeless appearance.
Bold colours: Red, blue, green, and other saturated tones can make your images stand out.
Monochromatic outfits: Wearing similar colours throughout your outfit can create a cohesive, editorial look.
If you're unsure what to choose, bring a few options. We can discuss which outfit works best with the lighting and background planned for your session.
How Many Dance photoshoot Outfits Should I Bring?
For a standard Dance Movement Session, I recommend prioritizing one main outfit that suits your creative vision.
Your session includes 30 minutes of photography, five professionally edited final images, and one lighting and background setup. With limited time, having your main look prepared helps us focus on creating strong photographs rather than spending too much time changing outfits.
If you have additional outfit ideas, bring them along as options, but keep in mind that outfit changes will take time away from photography.
If you want to create several distinct looks or explore different concepts, get in touch before booking to discuss your goals and what may be possible.
How to Prepare for Your Dance Photoshoot
Choosing your outfit is only one part of preparing for a successful dance photography session. A little planning beforehand can help you feel more confident and make the most of your time in the studio.
Bring Inspiration Photos
I always recommend bringing a few inspiration photos to your session. These can show poses, lighting styles, outfits, or creative concepts you would like to explore.
You don't need to recreate the references exactly. They're a starting point that helps communicate your vision and gives us ideas to work with.
Try Your Outfit Before the Session
Make sure your clothing fits comfortably and allows you to perform your preferred movements. Try your outfit while stretching, extending, jumping, or practising the poses you want to photograph.
Check for anything that shifts, bunches, or restricts your movement.
Prepare Your Dance Shoes and Accessories
Bring the appropriate footwear for your dance style, along with any accessories required for your concept.
Make sure your shoes are clean and ready to use. If your session involves pointe work or specific technical movements, bring the equipment you normally use.
Arrive Ready to Move
Get a good night's rest, stay hydrated, and give yourself enough time to arrive without rushing. It's also a good idea to warm up before attempting demanding movements.
You don't need to arrive knowing every pose. I'll guide you through positioning and movement during your session, and additional choreographer support is available as an add-on if you'd like more specialized guidance.
