What If I Don't Know How to Pose for Dance Photography?

Dance Photo

You don't need to know how to pose for the camera to book a Dance Movement Session. My goal is to help you feel comfortable, confident, and prepared to create images that showcase your movement and personality.

As a dance photographer, I work with dancers to find positions, angles, and movements that translate beautifully into photographs. Throughout your session, I'll provide direction on body positioning, arm placement, lines, extensions, and how to make small adjustments to create stronger images.

I'll Guide You Throughout Your Session

You don't have to arrive with a complete plan or know exactly what to do. We'll work together to create images that suit your dance style, experience, and creative vision.

During your session, I'll help you with:

  • Posing and positioning: Finding flattering angles and strong body lines that highlight your technique.

  • Movement direction: Exploring movements and transitions that create dynamic photographs.

  • Small adjustments: Refining your hands, feet, arms, and posture to make each image more intentional.

  • Expression and presentation: Helping you communicate your personality and artistic style through your photographs.

Whether you're a beginner building your first portfolio or an experienced dancer looking to try something new, I'll provide guidance throughout the process.

Bring Inspiration Photos to Your Session

One of my biggest recommendations is to arrive with a few inspiration photos. These can be images from other dancers, photographers, magazines, or anywhere you've found a pose, lighting style, or creative concept you love.

You don't need to recreate these images exactly. They're simply a useful starting point for communicating your ideas and helping us understand the look you're hoping to achieve.

It's always a good idea to show up semi-prepared. Having a few poses in mind, saving some reference images, and thinking about the style you want will help us make the most of our time together.

Consider preparing a small collection of inspiration photos that show:

  • Poses or movements you'd like to try.

  • Lighting and background styles you find appealing.

  • The overall mood or aesthetic you want your photographs to have.

  • Different ideas that reflect your personality and dance style.

You don't need to plan every photograph in advance. Think of it as bringing a starting point rather than a strict checklist. We'll use your references as inspiration and adapt the ideas to your abilities, preferences, and the studio setup.

Want Additional Guidance? Add a Choreographer to Your Session

If you'd like more specialized support with movement, you can add a choreographer to your Dance Movement Session.

Having a choreographer present can be especially helpful if you're unsure how to translate your dance training into poses for the camera or want to explore more complex movements. They can provide additional guidance on technique, positioning, and movement choices while I focus on lighting, composition, and creating the photographs.

This option is ideal for dancers who want extra confidence, more detailed movement direction, or support in developing a specific creative concept.

Let's Create Something Together

Your Dance Movement Session is a collaborative experience. You bring your movement and artistic personality, and I'll help you turn that into photographs you can use for your portfolio, auditions, and professional presence.

You don't need to know every pose in advance. Bring a few ideas, arrive ready to explore, and we'll work together to create something you're proud of.

Dance Movement Sessions start at $250 and include 30 minutes of photography, 5 professionally edited images, and 1 lighting and background setup. Choreographer support is available as an add-on.
