Dancing In The Void

Project type

Photographs

Date

Spring 2026

Location

Toronto, Ontario

Dancing in the Void is an ongoing photographic series that explores the relationship between movement, stillness, and the human body through collaborations with dancers and other movement-based artists. By removing the body from its familiar environment, the work strips away context to isolate gesture, form, and presence, inviting viewers to engage with movement in its purest visual form.

Within a minimal, undefined space, fleeting moments are transformed into sculptural images. Movements that exist for only an instant are suspended, allowing the precision, tension, and emotion within the body to emerge. The photographs slow time, encouraging contemplation of movement as something both physical and expressive.

Rather than documenting performance, Dancing in the Void examines the space between action and stillness. Created through close collaboration with each participant, the series reflects a shared process in which movement is translated into a lasting photographic form. The resulting images speak to discipline, vulnerability, and the quiet dialogue between the body and the void.

As an extension of my In the Void series, this body of work continues my exploration of the human figure in isolation while expanding its focus to the language of movement itself. Through the absence of setting and narrative, Dancing in the Void invites viewers to consider how identity, emotion, and presence can be communicated through the body alone.

VISUAL PRACTICE

Alex Rojas is a photographer and visual artist based in Vaughan and the Greater Toronto Area whose practice explores movement, performance, and the human form. Working across dance, sports, portraiture, and editorial photography, Alex creates imagery that goes beyond documentation to communicate the strength, individuality, and artistry of his subjects.

Drawing from his background as an athlete and his training as a visual artist, Alex approaches movement from both a physical and conceptual perspective. His work brings together an understanding of performance with a cinematic, editorial visual language, creating photographs that help dancers, athletes, creatives, and brands present themselves with intention and impact.

Alongside commissioned work, Alex develops personal projects that explore movement, identity, emotion, and the ways the body communicates experience.
